A Certificate of Conduct (VOG): What is it and when do you need it for work?
Are you applying for jobs and frequently coming across the abbreviation VOG? Then it’s very useful to understand what a Certificate of Conduct entails and when it is required for a job.
What does a VOG entail?
A VOG is an official document that confirms your past behavior does not pose a risk for the role you wish to perform. Simply put: it proves that you have not committed any criminal offenses relevant to the job you’re applying for.
Think of jobs involving money, vulnerable groups such as children or the elderly, or roles where you have access to sensitive information. In these types of situations, an employer may require a VOG.
When is a VOG mandatory for a job?
Not every position requires a VOG, but it is quite common for employers to request one. Whether a VOG is necessary depends entirely on the type of work and the industry.
Here are a few examples of situations where a VOG is often required:
-
You work with children or young people.
-
You have access to confidential information.
-
You are employed by a government agency.
-
You are responsible for financial transactions or valuable assets.
At 365Werk, job listings always clearly indicate whether a VOG is required.
How do you apply for a VOG?
You always apply for a VOG through the employer who intends to hire you; you cannot arrange this on your own. If a VOG is needed, your employer will inform you and initiate the application process.
There are two ways to apply for a VOG:
-
Digitally via Justis This is the most common and fastest method. You will receive an email from Justis with a special application code. Using this code, you log in with DigiD, verify your information, and complete the application with an iDEAL payment. Make sure you have the following ready:

In writing via the municipality Sometimes the application is done in writing. In that case, you will receive an application form from the employer or organization. You then submit this form to the municipality where you are registered. This method is slightly more expensive, namely €41.35.
